Phoenix transfer stations: where to dump trash

The two City of Phoenix transfer stations, North Gateway off I-17 and 27th Avenue south of Lower Buckeye, take self-hauled trash six days a week. Phoenix trash customers dump one load up to a ton free each month with their city services bill and photo ID. Everyone else pays $55 a ton, $40 minimum.

The city's State Route 85 Landfill in Buckeye is not open to the public, so these two stations are where Phoenix self-haul goes. West Valley haulers also have the Glendale Municipal Landfill, which posts its own gate rate.

The free monthly load, and what it takes

A Phoenix residential customer who pays full-service trash fees gets one load up to 1 ton (2,000 lb) per calendar month at no charge. At the scale house you show a current city services bill (water, sewer, trash) that isn't delinquent, plus a photo ID whose name or address matches the bill. The city says no substitutions.

Over a ton, you leave a deposit, weigh out after dumping and pay $55 a ton for the extra. Deposits are cash only (a bank rule, per the city), usually $65 to $180 for residential loads. A deposit applies when the vehicle and trailer weigh over 6,000 lb, or 9,000 lb for a resident with a water bill.

Hours, holidays and getting in

Both stations keep the same hours: Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday. They close for 13 city holidays, including Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov 11, 2026), Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas. Christmas Eve hours are 6 a.m. to noon.

Cover and tie down your load. The penalty for an unsecured load is $20, and the city asks you not to uncover until you're inside. Staff may direct you to sort material into separate areas for recycling.

Tires, appliances, TVs and boats

Tires: Phoenix residents can bring up to 5 car tires a year, rims removed. Off-road, semi and motorcycle tires aren't accepted. State law keeps tires out of landfills, so they go in a separate container.

Appliances: refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves and AC units are accepted. Residents get two CRT TVs free per month; after that it's $20 per CRT plus the tonnage fee.

Boats and spas must be cut into fourths, or a $50 penalty applies, and you need the registration or title.

Bulk trash pickup instead of hauling

Phoenix collects bulk trash by appointment only, up to four pickups a year. Book online or at 602-262-6251 at least 3 business days ahead. Set the pile out no more than 7 days early and by 5:30 a.m. on your date, within 5 feet of the curb, no larger than 10 cubic yards.

Bulk pickup won't take tires, household hazardous waste, refrigerant appliances, glass, or bricks, concrete and dirt. The scheduler blocks Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day plus the 7 days after each. Other Valley cities run their own systems, compared in our Valley bulk trash and free dump guide.

Paint, batteries and other hazardous waste

The transfer stations refuse regulated hazardous waste. Phoenix runs an at-home household hazardous waste pickup instead: one per residential account per calendar year, booked with your account number. When we checked, the booking form said reservations were closed and pointed to [email protected] for updates.

RVers note: holding-tank waste doesn't go to a transfer station. Use an RV dump instead, listed in the Phoenix RV dump stations guide on our sister site.

Questions people ask

Is dumping free at the Phoenix transfer stations?

For Phoenix residential trash customers, one load up to one ton each calendar month is free. Bring a current city services bill that is not delinquent and a photo ID with a matching name or address. Anything over a ton costs $55 a ton. Everyone else pays $55 a ton with a $40 minimum.

Can I take trash to the State Route 85 Landfill?

No. The City of Phoenix says its State Route 85 Landfill in Buckeye is not open to the general public. Phoenix trash is staged at the North Gateway and 27th Avenue transfer stations and hauled to the landfill from there, so those two stations are where you self-haul a load.

Where can I get rid of old tires in Phoenix?

Phoenix residents can take up to five car tires a year to either city transfer station, with the rims removed. The stations do not take off-road, semi or motorcycle tires. Tires are kept in a separate container because state law keeps them out of landfills, and bulk trash pickup will not collect tires of any size.

What are the Phoenix transfer station hours?

Both North Gateway and 27th Avenue are open Monday to Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are closed on Sunday and on 13 city holidays, including Veterans Day on November 11, 2026, Thanksgiving and the day after, and Christmas.
