Phoenix Valley bulk trash and free dump loads, city by city

Phoenix Valley bulk trash rules change at every city line. Phoenix, Glendale and Gilbert each give residents one free self-haul load a month, Tempe a free 1,000 lb trip, and Chandler four free visits a year. Scottsdale picks up bulk monthly, Gilbert every five weeks, and Mesa charges from $31 a load.

Arizona cities don't hold one-off free dump days. The free loads below work any open day, as long as you bring your city utility bill and a matching photo ID.

Free self-haul loads by city

Phoenix: one load up to 1 ton per calendar month at the North Gateway or 27th Avenue transfer station, covered in the Phoenix transfer station guide.

Glendale: one load up to 2,000 lb a month at the Glendale Municipal Landfill for single-family and duplex homes on city trash service, then $15.79 a ton. Apartments, mobile home parks and county islands don't qualify.

Gilbert: one load up to 1 ton every 30 days at WM San Tan or Republic Services Mesa. Go over a ton and the whole load is charged.

Tempe: one trip a month up to 1,000 lb at WM Sky Harbor, with a safety vest required.

Chandler: your first 4 visits or bulk pickups a year, combined, are free up to 400 lb each at the city's collection center.

Curbside bulk pickup schedules

Phoenix: by appointment, up to 4 a year, booked at least 3 business days ahead.

Scottsdale: monthly brush and bulk week for residents on city service, in four areas north to south. Piles go out no sooner than 3 days before the Monday. November 2026 weeks: Area 1 Nov 30, Area 2 Nov 2 to 6, Area 3 Nov 9 to 13, Area 4 Nov 16 to 20.

Gilbert: every five weeks, except Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. Out no earlier than the Saturday before, by 5 a.m. Monday.

Tempe: every other month, by 6 a.m. Monday, no more than 10 days early, trash and green waste in separate piles.

Mesa: paid and scheduled: from $31 a load for Mesa customers, up to 4 loads per pickup. Call 480-644-6789 or book online.

Mattresses: who takes them at the curb

Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert and Mesa each list mattresses as accepted bulk items. Mesa asks you to tape a sheet marked "BB" to anything that has had bed bugs. Phoenix's bulk trash page names furniture but doesn't list mattresses by name, so ask at 602-262-6251 before you set one out.

For self-haul in the Tucson area, Los Reales takes mattresses at its regular load fee, per the Tucson landfill guide.

Appliances, tires and hazardous waste

Refrigerators and AC units are left out of most bulk pickups. Gilbert collects up to two appliances for $16 in your bulk week ($85 other weeks). Glendale charges $25 per Freon unit, Chandler $15 and Sky Harbor $45.

Tires never go in bulk piles in Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale or Gilbert. Phoenix and Glendale residents get 5 free tires (off the rim) and Chandler 5 a month.

Hazardous waste: Glendale's landfill takes household paint, oil and pool chemicals. Chandler takes it by appointment. Gilbert and Tempe run their own collection centers, and Scottsdale's city sites are not drop-off points.

What every city refuses at the curb

Across the Valley, bulk crews leave behind dirt, rock, concrete and bricks, remodeling debris, car parts and household hazardous waste. Most cap the pile near 10 cubic yards (Gilbert: one pile up to 10 by 5 by 5 feet) and want bagged grass and boxed cactus. Piles set out early break city rules: Phoenix allows 7 days, Gilbert the Saturday before, Scottsdale 3 days, Tempe 10.

Questions people ask

Are there free dump days in the Phoenix area?

Not as one-off events. Instead, several cities give residents a standing free load. Phoenix allows one load up to a ton a month, Glendale one load up to 2,000 pounds a month, Gilbert one load up to a ton every 30 days, Tempe one trip up to 1,000 pounds a month, and Chandler four free visits or bulk pickups a year.

How often is bulk trash picked up in Scottsdale, Gilbert and Tempe?

Scottsdale collects brush and bulk once a month for residents on city service, during a set week for each of its four areas. Gilbert picks up every five weeks, skipping Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks. Tempe collects bulk trash and green organics every other month. Each city posts its area map and dates on its own website.

What do I need to bring for a free dump load?

Every city that offers a free load asks for proof that you are a residential trash customer. Phoenix, Glendale, Gilbert and Chandler want a current city utility bill and a photo ID that matches it, and Tempe wants a driver license with a matching address. Contractors and businesses pay the regular gate rate.

Does Mesa have free bulk trash pickup?

No. Mesa's bulk item pickup is a paid, scheduled service. It starts at $31 a load for Mesa trash customers and $39.59 for others, with a load about 4 by 8 by 4 feet and up to four loads per pickup. Refrigerators, stoves and washers go through Mesa's separate appliance recycling program.
