Where to dump a mattress in Phoenix and Tucson

If you're asking where to dump a mattress in Phoenix, the surest answer is a city transfer station, North Gateway or 27th Avenue, where residential customers get one free load up to 1 ton a month. In Tucson, Los Reales Landfill lists mattresses by name and charges $18 plus a $2 fee for a covered small load.

Curbside pickup is murkier. Neither city's bulk program names mattresses on its accepted list, and Phoenix city code lists them as not acceptable, so call before you set one out.

Phoenix: haul it to a transfer station on your free monthly load

Phoenix residential customers who pay full service trash fees can drop off one load up to 2,000 lb each calendar month at no charge at either city transfer station. Bring a current city services bill (water, sewer, trash) that isn't delinquent and a photo ID whose name or address matches it. A mattress and box spring weigh far less than a ton, so they fit easily inside that load with other junk.

Without the resident perk, the gate rate is $55 a ton with a $40 minimum. Both stations take cash or card. Hours are Monday to Friday 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed Sunday, Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov 11, 2026), Thanksgiving and the day after. Directions and the full fee list are in the Phoenix transfer stations guide.

The city's transfer station page doesn't name mattresses on either list. Its prohibited list covers regulated hazardous, PCB, radioactive, infectious and liquid wastes, so a mattress should go through as a normal load, but staff may direct you to a specific unloading area.

Phoenix bulk trash pickup: a mattress is a gray area

Phoenix bulk trash is by appointment only, with four pickups a year per household. Book online or at 602-262-6251 at least 3 business days ahead, set the pile out no more than 7 days early and by 5:30 a.m. on your date, and keep it under 10 cubic yards within 5 feet of the curb.

Here's the catch for a mattress bulk trash pickup. The city's bulk trash page says furniture is often bulk trash and doesn't mention mattresses. Phoenix City Code section 27-22, last amended in 2021, lists "all mattresses or furniture" among items not acceptable for normal residential collection. The two don't agree, so ask the city at 602-262-6251 before you book, or haul the mattress yourself.

The scheduler also blocks Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day plus the 7 days after each, so late November and late December dates fill fast. Other Valley cities do take mattresses at the curb, as the Valley bulk trash comparison shows for Scottsdale, Tempe, Gilbert and Mesa.

Tucson: Los Reales Landfill takes mattresses by name

For mattress disposal in Tucson, Los Reales is the clearest option. The City of Tucson lists mattresses as accepted landfill waste, along with furniture, rugs, green waste and construction debris, and the landfill is open to residential self-haulers from Tucson and Pima County.

A covered load under 2,000 lb costs $18, plus the $2 environmental fee every load pays. An uncovered load adds $10, and the city counts a tarp, blanket or sheet as a cover. Payment is card, tap or Apple Pay only, so leave the cash at home.

Hours are Monday to Saturday 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. It closes Sundays, Thanksgiving (Thursday, Nov 26, 2026) and Christmas (Friday, Dec 25, 2026). Turn south on Craycroft Road off I-10. More on the campus and its recycling center is in the Tucson landfill guide.

Tucson curbside: Brush and Bulky or a special brush and bulky pickup

City of Tucson crews visit each of the 26 trash service areas twice a year for Brush and Bulky. The accepted list names furniture and carpet but not mattresses, so confirm with Customer Service at 520-791-3171 before you add one to the pile.

Since Jan 1, 2026, piles must sit at the curb in front of your home; alley piles aren't collected except in special pickup areas. Have everything out by 6 a.m. on the Monday of your week, no more than two weeks early, 3 feet from walls, meters, mailboxes and vehicles. The limit is 10 cubic yards per household.

Can't wait for your week? A special brush and bulky pickup can be ordered any time online or at 520-791-3171. City code sets it at $95 per event for up to 10 cubic yards, plus $10 per cubic yard over that and $35 for each 15 minutes past the first 15.

Pima County transfer stations north and south of Tucson

Outside city limits, the Catalina (Oracle Road) and Sahuarita (La Canada Drive, west of I-19) transfer stations take residential loads for $27.60 per vehicle under a ton, or $48 a ton above that. Both are open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The county lists furniture, carpet, green waste and construction debris as accepted at both, but its flyer doesn't name mattresses. Call Catalina at 520-339-9172 or Sahuarita at 520-305-8708 before a trip. The smaller Ryan Field station takes only bagged household waste and refuses furniture, so skip it for a mattress.

Getting a mattress there legally and without a fee

A mattress catches wind in a pickup bed, so tie it down and cover it. Phoenix charges a $20 unsecured load penalty and asks you not to uncover until you're inside the station. Los Reales adds $10 for an uncovered load.

Don't leave a mattress in an alley, a vacant lot or the desert. Phoenix counts that as illegal dumping. To report dumping in progress, call 9-1-1 for emergencies or Crime Stop at 602-262-6151; otherwise call Public Works at 602-262-6251.

Questions people ask

Can I put a mattress out for Phoenix bulk trash pickup?

Maybe. The city's bulk trash page says furniture is often bulk trash and doesn't mention mattresses, while Phoenix City Code section 27-22 lists all mattresses or furniture as not acceptable for normal residential collection. Because the two disagree, call 602-262-6251 before you book an appointment, or take it to a transfer station on your free monthly load.

Is it free to dump a mattress in Phoenix?

It can be. Phoenix residential customers who pay full service trash fees get one load up to 1 ton free each calendar month at the North Gateway or 27th Avenue transfer station. Bring a current city services bill and a photo ID that matches it. Without the resident perk, the rate is $55 a ton with a $40 minimum.

How much does it cost to dump a mattress at Los Reales in Tucson?

A covered load under 2,000 lb is $18, plus the $2 environmental fee charged on every load, so $20 in total. An uncovered load adds $10, and a tarp, blanket or sheet counts as a cover. Los Reales takes card, tap or Apple Pay only and is open Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Will Tucson pick up a mattress at the curb?

Tucson's Brush and Bulky list names furniture and carpet but not mattresses, so check with Customer Service at 520-791-3171 first. Regular Brush and Bulky comes twice a year per service area. A special brush and bulky pickup can be ordered any time and costs $95 per event for up to 10 cubic yards, per city code.
