Tire disposal in Arizona: free limits by city and county

Tire disposal in Arizona works differently from trash: state law keeps waste tires out of landfills, so they go to a tire collection site, a city drop-off or the shop that sells you new ones. Each county's designated collection site has to take up to 5 tires a year free from county residents.

Verify before you go. Facilities change hours, fees and residency rules, and close for holidays. Everything here comes from the linked official sources, last checked . See a change? Tell us.

City limits vary a lot. Phoenix allows 5 car tires a year, Chandler 5 a month and Mesa 5 a day, and almost every site wants the rims off first.

Why tires can't go in your trash or a landfill load

Arizona Revised Statutes section 44-1304 bans waste tires from landfills and incinerators, except where ADEQ approves it in a landfill's plan. A person may only dispose of motor vehicle tires at a waste tire collection site or by an approved method such as retreading or grinding for asphalt.

The same law has each county run at least one designated collection site, paid for by the fee you see on a new tire invoice (2 percent of the price, capped at $2 a tire). Under section 44-1302, that site can't refuse or charge a county resident for up to five tires a year. Above five, it may charge a tipping fee.

That is why the Salt River Landfill and the WM Sky Harbor transfer station both turn tires away, and why city stations that do take them keep tires in a separate container.

Phoenix, Glendale, Chandler and Mesa: what each city takes

If you live in one of these cities and pay for city trash service, your own city site is usually the quickest stop. Bring a current utility bill and photo ID.

City siteFree tire limitRules
Phoenix, North Gateway or 27th Avenue5 car tires a yearRims off; no off-road, semi or motorcycle tires
Glendale Municipal Landfill5 car or truck tiresGlendale residents, rims off; call first
Chandler collection center5 passenger tires a monthRims off; tractor, semi, ATV and off-road tires 2 a year
Mesa hazardous materials facility5 car tires a dayNo rims; staff unload, one visit a day

Glendale's landfill page lists the 5 free tires, but its own unacceptable list also names "batteries and tires," so call 623-930-4720 before you load up. Phoenix says Maricopa County collects the tires from its stations for recycling. Hours, fees and directions for both Phoenix stations are in the Phoenix transfer stations guide, and the Mesa facility is covered in the Mesa trash guide.

The Maricopa County tire site in Mesa takes any county resident

Live in a county island, an apartment or a city without a tire program? The Maricopa County Waste Tire Collection Site at 11400 E Pecos Rd in Mesa, run by CRM of America, is the county's designated site. It is open Monday to Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., closed Sundays and holidays.

Residents may drop five waste tires a year at no fee; the county's registration page names passenger or semi tires. Expect paperwork. You register once with your County Assessor parcel number and a copy of your Arizona license or ID, and every load needs a completed disposal manifest, which the site hands out. Loads without one are turned away.

The tires must come from inside Maricopa County, off the rims, and not cut, burnt, shredded or caked in dirt. Over the limit, a tonnage fee applies, and the county doesn't post the rate, so call 480-987-2498. Off-road tires from farm, mining or other equipment fall outside the free program.

Rural Maricopa County transfer stations take 5 tires per visit

The county's six small transfer stations, at Aguila, Cave Creek, Hassayampa, Morristown, New River and Rainbow Valley, accept passenger and truck tires, 5 per visit, removed from the rim. They are open to every county resident with no ID required, but they take debit and credit cards only.

The county doesn't post a per-tire price for these stations and refuses commercial tires. Days differ by site: Cave Creek, Hassayampa and New River open Wednesday to Saturday, while Rainbow Valley opens only Friday and Saturday, all 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call the Waste Resources office at 602-506-4006 before a trip.

Tucson and Pima County: free at transfer stations, by the ton at Ina Road

Pima County residents can leave up to 5 tires a year free at the Catalina, Sahuarita and Ryan Field transfer stations. Off-road tires aren't accepted, and Ryan Field takes them with or without rims. To get rid of more than five, call 520-975-4111.

The county's own Ina Road Waste Tire Collection Facility, 5301 W Ina Rd, is also run by CRM of America and is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its posted fees are $30 a ton for standard on-road tires ($15 minimum), $150 a ton for off-road tires ($30 minimum), and $75 a load extra for tires on rims.

In the city, Los Reales Landfill charges $5 a tire, passenger tires only, up to 10, on top of its regular load fees. Tucson's Brush and Bulky collection also takes up to 5 auto tires in a separate pile. Both are in the Tucson landfill guide.

Buying new tires? The shop has to take your old ones

The simplest free option is often the tire counter. Under section 44-1302, a seller of new tires must accept your waste tires, up to the number of new tires you buy there each year. Bring the receipt if you come back later; the shop has to take them within 30 days of the purchase.

Shops must post a sign saying they're required to accept scrap tires when you buy new or recapped ones. New car dealers are exempt from this rule.

Whatever you do, don't leave tires in an alley or the desert. The law allows disposal only at a collection site or by an approved method, and the Phoenix stations note that state law keeps tires out of city landfills.

Questions people ask

How many tires can I dispose of for free in Arizona?

State law says each county's designated waste tire collection site can't charge a county resident for up to five tires a year. City limits differ: Phoenix takes 5 car tires a year, Glendale 5, Chandler 5 passenger tires a month and Mesa 5 car tires a day, mostly with the rims removed and only for residents who pay for city trash service.

Where can I drop off old tires in Phoenix?

Phoenix residents can take up to five automobile tires a year to the North Gateway or 27th Avenue transfer station, with the rims removed. Off-road, semi and motorcycle tires aren't accepted. Any Maricopa County resident can also use the county tire site at 11400 E Pecos Rd in Mesa, open Monday to Saturday, after registering and bringing a disposal manifest.

How much does tire disposal cost in Tucson?

Los Reales Landfill charges $5 a tire, passenger tires only, up to 10, on top of its regular load fees. Pima County residents can leave up to 5 tires a year free at the Catalina, Sahuarita and Ryan Field transfer stations. The Ina Road site charges $30 a ton for standard tires with a $15 minimum.

Do tire shops in Arizona have to take old tires?

Yes, when you buy new tires there. A seller of new tires must accept waste tires up to the number of new tires sold to you that year, and must take them if you bring the receipt within 30 days of the purchase. Shops can accept more if they choose. New car dealers are exempt from this rule.
