Phoenix household hazardous waste: where each Valley city takes it

Phoenix household hazardous waste, from old paint to pool chemicals, goes through your own city, not a transfer station. Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert run drive-up drop-off centers, Chandler takes it by appointment, and Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale send a crew to your home. Nearly every program is limited to that city's own residents.

Verify before you go. Facilities change hours, fees and residency rules, and close for holidays. Everything here comes from the linked official sources, last checked . See a change? Tell us.

Phoenix allows one free home pickup a year, but its booking form said reservations were closed when we checked on November 2, 2026. The drop-off centers in Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert are open three or four days a week.

Drop-off center or home pickup: what your city runs

Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler say their programs cost residents nothing extra. Tempe, Gilbert, Peoria and Glendale post no fee for their hazardous waste service.

Mesa, Tempe and Gilbert: drive-up drop-off centers

The Mesa Household Hazardous Materials facility at 2412 N Center St, Bldg 2, is open Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., for Mesa residents who pay the Green and Clean fee. Staff unload while you stay in the car, one visit per household a day. Daily limits are 10 gallons of automotive fluids and 20 gallons of paint, with no container over 5 gallons. It is the only site here that lists small arms ammunition and fireworks as accepted. It closes November 11, 26 and 27, December 24 and 25, and January 1. The Mesa trash guide covers its tire and appliance limits.

Tempe's Household Products Collection Center, 1320 E University Dr, serves Tempe and Guadalupe residents Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Bring a driver's license or a printout of a current Tempe or Guadalupe utility bill; ASU student IDs count too. Pack items in cardboard boxes in the trunk, bed or rear hatch, never in plastic bags. The center is closed Saturday, November 7 for a Zero Waste Day, which runs 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. next door at the Tempe Fire Training Center, 1340 E University Dr, and also takes electronics, appliances and tires.

Gilbert's Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 2224 E Queen Creek Rd, is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., for Gilbert residents with a state or federal ID and a Gilbert utility bill. You unload onto a cart yourself. The limit is 10 gallons of any one liquid a day and 5 tires a year off the rim. Its next mobile drop-off event is January 9, 2027, at Gilbert Town Hall.

Chandler and Glendale take it with conditions

Chandler accepts household hazardous waste by appointment only at the Recycling-Solid Waste Collection Center, 955 E Queen Creek Rd. Call 480-782-3510, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a list of what you have and how much. City trash customers and residents of apartments, townhomes and multi-family homes can book; county islands and Sun Lakes can't. Paint is capped at 25 gallons, counted by container size, and car fluids and cooking oil at 10 gallons each. Medium and large lithium batteries, such as scooter packs, are refused.

The Glendale Municipal Landfill, 11480 W Glendale Ave, takes hazardous waste from households: paint and stains, antifreeze, motor oil and filters, pool chemicals and pesticides, in original or labeled containers. Its own list also rules out batteries, and it doesn't say whether these items count toward the free monthly resident load or carry the gate rate, so call 623-930-4720 first.

Phoenix, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale pick up at your home

  • Phoenix: one free pickup per solid waste customer per calendar year, booked with the account number on your City Services Bill. The form said reservations were closed when we checked and asks you to email [email protected] to learn when they reopen. Set a box marked HHW next to your garage or front door by 7 a.m., never at the curb. The Phoenix transfer stations refuse regulated hazardous waste.
  • Scottsdale: up to 3 free pickups a year per address, in every month of 2026 except June and December. Signups open on the 1st at 8 a.m. and close when full, and November showed full when we checked. Each visit takes up to 20 gallons by container size. Details are in the Scottsdale bulk trash guide.
  • Peoria: pickup by appointment at 623-773-7836 or online. Booking opens January 11, 2027, for collections January 25 to February 12, with more windows in April and October 2027. Oil-based paint, gasoline, motor oil and antifreeze are limited to 5 gallons each, and latex paint is not taken.
  • Glendale: pickups run in a spring and a fall window; both 2026 windows are over and 2027 dates were not posted. Call 623-930-2660 with your list. Apartments, condos, townhomes and mobile home parks are not eligible.

Latex paint, batteries and medicine usually skip the hazardous route

Latex paint is the item people haul most often, and it rarely needs a special trip. Mesa, Peoria, Chandler and Maricopa County all say to let it dry out, with kitty litter or a paint hardener if needed, then put the can in your trash. Oil-based paint still goes to a hazardous waste program.

Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt) can be bagged and put in the trash, per Chandler, Peoria and Glendale. Rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries can't. Medications go to police station drop boxes in Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert, and Scottsdale says mixing them with water and coffee grounds in a sealed container for the black bin is fine. Mesa and Scottsdale put used sharps in the trash inside a taped, puncture-proof container marked "Do Not Recycle."

Old tires follow separate state rules; the free tire limits by city list where each one goes.

County islands and unincorporated Maricopa County

Maricopa County says hazardous waste collection in cities is run by each city, and in unincorporated areas by private services. The county's own transfer stations take up to 5 gallons of used oil and antifreeze for free and no other hazardous waste.

If you live on a county island, Chandler's page names two private disposal companies, Clean Earth (602-276-7602) and Universal Environmental Services (800-988-7977). Neither has a posted price on the city page, and the county says businesses that recycle paint charge a fee. For curbside bulk rules city by city, use the Valley bulk trash comparison.

Questions people ask

Where can I drop off household hazardous waste in Phoenix?

The City of Phoenix has no drop-off site for residents. It offers one free home pickup per solid waste customer each year, and its booking form said reservations were closed when we checked on November 2, 2026. Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert and Chandler run drop-off programs, but each one takes only its own residents, with a photo ID and a city utility bill.

Is household hazardous waste disposal free in the Phoenix area?

For residents it usually is. Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler say their programs cost residents nothing extra, and Tempe, Gilbert, Peoria and Glendale post no fee for theirs. Unincorporated Maricopa County residents are pointed to private services instead, although the county's transfer stations take up to 5 gallons of used oil and antifreeze for free.

Can I throw latex paint in the trash in Arizona?

Yes, once it is completely dry. Mesa, Peoria, Chandler and Maricopa County all say to dry out latex paint, using kitty litter or a paint hardener to speed it up, and then put it in your regular trash. Peoria's home pickup does not take latex paint at all. Oil-based paint is hazardous and should go to your city's program instead.

What do the hazardous waste programs refuse?

Commercial and business waste is refused everywhere. Most programs also turn away medical sharps, prescription drugs, explosives and containers over 5 gallons. Chandler and Scottsdale refuse medium and large lithium batteries such as e-bike or scooter packs, and Gilbert refuses EV batteries. Mesa is the only one here that lists small arms ammunition and fireworks as accepted.
